The 12 miles of beaches on Hilton Head Island are considered its most beautiful natural resource. At low tide, the beach extends to a width of 600 feet. Tide levels change as much as eight feet about every six hours. All of Hilton Head's beautiful beaches are public, from the ocean to the high water mark. Access to the beach, however, is often private. if your accommodations do not provide direct access to the beach, you can usually find public access nearby. The Town of Hilton Head provides four public beach accesses: Alder Lane Beach Access off South Forest Beach Drive; Coligny Beach Circle; both on the South end of the island and Driessen Beach Park at the end of Bradley Beach Road; and Folly Field Beach Park off Folly Field Road, both mid-island.
In addition to walking, swimming or biking the beaches, there are many other water activities available. Check into the boat cruises or sailing charters. Watch Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin at play while you learn about the environment on an EcoTour. Try a kayak lesson and tour or get into some action water sports via a powerboat. You can also spend the day aboard a fishing or shrimping charter. If you love the water, you'll love Hilton Head!
Springfest begins in March with a month-long celebration, including the infamous Hilton Head St. Patrick's Day Parade. One of the largest outdoor wine festivals in the Southeast, Winefest, is held on the last Saturday of March. And April is the month for the MCI Classic - The Heritage of Golf, which celebrates its 33rd year in 2001. The Tournament is always a popular stop for many of the high-ranking players on the Men's Professional Golf Tour. Cool Breeze Kayaking offers a variety of kayaking trips, including dolphin watching and sunset tours, to provide those memorable family experiences to complete your vacation. For another type of memorable experience, join Captain Jim aboard the Crabber J and learn to crab. You get to take home what you catch!
And to see the island up close, rent bikes for the family from Palmetto Bikes and pedal along the miles of bicycle paths or along the beach. Treat yourself to a massage during your stay. You can go to them or they will come to you. You could get used to it! Any time of the year is a great time to be on Hilton Head!
